Pony Swim and Auction - Saltwater cowboys
round up the wild ponies on Assateague
Island and swim them over to Chincoteague.
The young ponies are sold to thin the herd,
which in turn balances the ecology of their
limited island habitat. Proceeds from the
auction benefit the town of Chincoteague.
This annual event was made famous by Marguerite
Henryís childrens book, Misty of Chincoteague
